Sri Lanka Design Festival 09

Sri Lanka Design Festival, a national event, aims to promote the creative industries of Sri Lanka. Each year, the event will have one area of prime focus.

Sri Lanka Design Festival 2009, scheduled to take place during the week of 27 November to 6 December 2009, will focus on the fashion industry of SriLanka; its journey and its transition from a manufacturing industry to a knowledge-based creative industry founded on sound ethical and sustainable practices.

During this week, Sri Lanka Design Festival 2009 will showcase Sri Lanka Apparel's manufacturing excellence and ethical positioning under the 'Garments without Guilt' initiative, highlight the use of modern technology (i.e. Nano Technology) as well as highlighting the overall design capabilities with directional fashion (integrating elements of design and finishing).

Key opinion leaders such as Hilary Alexander, Colin Mc Dowell, designers and buyers from the international world of fashion have already confirmed to participate. Monsoon, TOPSHOP, FromSomwhere, Zara are to name a few of the retailers who will be participating. The Fashion Shows will also showcase a few of the international designers who are preparing collections based on Sri Lankan textiles.

While the year 2009 has been specially designated for the promulgation of Fashion Design, Sri Lanka Design Festival would also give prominence to other design sectors such as Crafts, Graphic, Interior and Jewellery Design. These sectors would also be displayed to add depth to what is truly known as Sri Lankan design.

The series of events of exhibitions, lectures, seminars, symposium and workshops have been segmented to serve the local industries to propel their designs and their manufacturing products to the world scene and also to expose themselves to many professionals who would not only add value to the knowledge base but hopefully will

Academy of Design offers a wide range of Graphic Design courses

Graphic design today is far away from the long days of mouse - clicking, choosing typefaces, software and paper samples. Graphic design today is a combination of graphics, advertising and multimedia design.
'Graphic Design in Sri Lanka is often synonymous with Computers. But in reality it's only part of the story. Graphic Design is a reflective, problem-solving discipline: a creative process that combines art and technology to visually convey a message to an audience. The graphic designer uses diverse forms of communication beyond the printed matter that is the graphic designer's mainstay. In essence, graphic designers utilize the traditions, cultural heritage, symbols, and civic values of preceding generations into visual forms that are used everyday by nearly everyone.
At the Academy of Design, students learn to formulate vibrant and efficient communication solutions with the imagination of an artist and the meticulousness of a scientist. The Graphic Design Programme stresses creative and intellectual thinking as well as awareness of individual, social, and cultural issues. At the same time, students learn to be concerned about ethical implications and impact on the community. Students are introduced to new technology and use various mediums to translate the verbal message into visual language.
Students gain skills in solving communication problems through research in addition to identifying and evaluating the client and audience needs. These skills enable them to create appropriate and powerful solutions to the tasks assigned.
While students learn about Communication Design in the classroom, they are also exposed to the professional world through guest lectures and field trips aimed at enhancing their knowledge of design in both the academic and professional aspects of the discipline.
Careers
Graduates gain employment in: publishing; web design; advertising; branding; illustration; animation; TV and Video production; graphic design; photography.
A decade ago, design was considered a hobby in Sri Lanka. But now more recently it is being recognized as a profession and a serious educational discipline. This is an important step forward. While many have long known and believed design to be a serious profession, the academy has strived to confirm this belief and has made it a reality. The Academy believes strongly in the importance of the recognition of design as a profession, the academy undergraduate programmes prepare graduates, in combination with the requisite experience and knowledge to be professional designers. Future generations of designers must perform at ever higher levels of professionalism in order to sustain this confidence. The Academy of Design is proud to be a vital part of Colombo's educational and cultural life and a creative force in the continued growth of design as both an educational discipline and a dynamic profession. The Academy hopes that having read this, you will share its enthusiasm for the study of design.

A Guide to Photography and Taking Pictures for Graphic Designers

As a graphic designer, sooner or later you will need to take a picture. If you are fortunate enough to work for a company which supplies you with a camera, use it if that camera is good enough. If it is not, find one that is.

What is good enough? A camera that can provide enough light to adequate illuminate the subject. This can be done with a built-in flash or with an add-on flash. AND, a digital camera that provides enough pixel resolution. A good rule of thumb is anything below 6 megapixels probably won't do everything you need done.
QUICK FACT

A hot shoe is the place on a camera where a removable flash is mounted. The hot shoe interface allows the camera and flash to work together.

In general and if you can afford it, get an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) with a removable lens. Some cameras with a permanently attached lens will work, but it needs to be a zoom (telephoto or magnification lens).
PRO TIP

Years ago as a photographer who shot several rolls of film a week, I carried a 35-200 mm zoom lens. It met 99.5 percent of my needs a photojournalist. Then, I got my hands on a 24 mm. That lens, a 135 mm fixed length and a 70-200 mm took 99.98 percent of my pictures. The 24 mm shot more than 90 percent of my pictures.

I found that the wide angle lens forced me to get up close to my subjects. By getting close, I picked up details I missed standing a distance away. I started noticing details I missed before. I had to pay more attention to light and the surroundings. As a result, the quality of my photography went way up and I began to receive awards and assignments (which meant more money) that had passed me by previously.

The three basic rules of photography, especially where graphic design is concerned are: Get Close. Get Close. Get Close.

After you get close, start paying attention to what you are taking a picture of.

Start framing that picture, with the camera viewfinder or display, for use in your project before you ever snap the first shot. The viewfinder or screen image is the final edge of the picture. If you think of it as the final edge of the picture for when you turn it into art for your design, you'll find you will have to get a lot closer than you expect. You'll also take better pictures.
Getting close means several things:

Rule 1 is More detail in your final image. A good thing, unless your project calls for a blurry image.

Rule 2 is Less cropping needed. With digital images this is especially important. The more you enlarge a digital image, the faster the image quality drops off. When you enlarge a digital image, you enlarge the pixels which make up that image. There is a point of diminishing returns.
